On 3 June 2009 we were given a brief by Peter Hall to document the area of Elephant & Castle (the location of the London College of Communication) following in the footsteps of the Mass Observation social research organisation (1937 to early 1950s).
Katie and I were a little anxious about the concept if intervening in peoples lives as they go about their everyday business, to us the mass observation felt like a middle class pursuit, so we decided to take ourselves off to St Mary’s Churchyard and have lunch and record our time spent there. The children’s play area turned out to be great fun. We broke the rules by not having children with us, a requirement for using the playground.
Instead of writing a text, Katie and I created our own photo essays and captioned them.
